Mercy Because of Covenant
At the end of a recent class, the instructor (Ap. Barbara Wentroble) had a us spend a period of time praying and decreeing. Something I believe Holy Spirit showed me during that time was that the children of Israel didn’t really deserve for God to free them from Egyptian bondage. What I felt like He said to me was that the children of Israel were not righteous. God did not deliver them because of their righteousness. He delivered them because they were His covenant people and they were crying out to Him because of the oppression.
At the time I heard that, I was thinking about the covenants that were made with God at the founding of this country. I was thinking about the one made at Cape Henry in 1607. And then the first thing George Washington did when he was sworn in as the first president was to pray and dedicate this nation to God. When the first Congress opened their first session the very first thing they did was the same.
People can try to rewrite history, but God does not forget.
I felt like what He was saying is that He is going to save America, not because we deserve it but because of the covenants made with Him and that His people are crying out under the oppression.
As I was writing this, it occurred to me that there is another similarity. Many, if not most, of the Israelites in Egypt weren’t really looking for a deliverer or deliverance. They might have known things were bad, but, hopefully, they would get better with "the next" pharaoh (next administration). Surely, they couldn't get worse!
There are too many of God’s people, those who call themselves Christian, that still do not get the level of evil going on and that we need deliverance. (That is not a political statement. It is a statement of shift in morals and values and of the many wicked, evil things being done openly and, even more so, behind closed doors.) Nor do they recognize that God has raised up a deliverer for them. Not because of who he is, but because God has chosen him, just like God chose a refugee (a murderer) on the back side of the desert to return to Egypt and deliver Israel.
NOTE: In all of history, God has only used a "perfect" person once, His Son, Jesus. All of the others were fallen humanity, complete with their flaws - be that Abraham, Moses, most of the judges (aka "deliverers" of Israel) such as Samson, or even King David. Don't look for perfection; look for whom God is using to save His people and advance His message. Sometimes you need a Samson swinging a jawbone!
I believe that we have reached “the fullness of time” and God is going to show His strong arm of justice - so that we can as a nation return to our original purpose which was stated clearly at Cape Henry: to spread the gospel from shore to shore and from these shores around the world.
He needs His Church to rise up and work with Him by voting and voting according to His values.
Something Holy Spirit spoke to me clearly in early 2021 that has started coming to me again strongly recently is, “It is time. It’s time indeed.”
